Information About Specific UCF/PHPAO Clinical Internship ProgramsThe Pre-Health Professions Advisement Office (PHPAO) has established agreements with a number of health care provider organizations and physician societies in the greater Orlando area, to implement one-semester long clinical shadowing internship opportunities for UCF premedical students. Participating students are required to register for one unit of academic credit (MCB 4941) for this internship course, and their shadowing efforts and attendance record are evaluated at the end of the semester of service by the physicians they shadow or by pertinent administrators of the medical facility where their service took place. Below are the abbreviated descriptions of the four clinical internship programs currently overseen by the PHPAO. Two of these internship programs at Florida Hospital – East Orlando in osteopathic medicine and at the VA Hospital- Orlando in optometry have only recently been established and will welcome their first student participants in the spring semester 2010. Florida Hospital - Orlando Florida Hospital MD Application - Medical Specialty – Family Practice - Duties: to shadow Physicians and Residents in Family Practice Clinic - Shadowing Commitment: One morning per week on weekdays (8am-1pm) - Length of Service: Spring semester (Jan. – April) - Program Orientation Period: One late afternoon/early evening (during the first week of classes) - Minimum GPA Requirement: 3.3 - Other Requirements: Unofficial copy of transcripts/academic audit and Personal Resume and weekly calendar view of Spring 2010 class schedule to be submitted with application - Academic Credit: Registration for MCB 4941 (required ONLY for selected Program Participants – one credit unit – PHPAO will register participants for the credit) - Health Screening: TB test and immunization record for the past year are required ONLY for selected Program Participants - Program Eligibility: PRIORITY given to students entering their APPLICATION year (those who will apply the summer after completing the internship.) - Successful applicants will be notified by email communication prior to the start of the Spring semester Florida Hospital – East Orlando Florida Hospital DO Application - Medical Specialty: Family Practice - Duties: To shadow Osteopathic Physicians and Residents in Family Practice - Shadowing Commitment: One afternoon per week on weekdays (1-5pm) - Length of Service: Spring semester (Jan. – April) - Program Orientation Period: One late afternoon/early evening (during the first week of Spring classes) - Minimum GPA Requirement: 3.3 - Other Requirements: Unofficial copy of transcripts/academic audit, Personal Resume and “weekly view” of Spring class schedule to be submitted with application - Academic Credit: Registration for MCB 4941 (required ONLY for selected Program Participants – one credit unit – PHPAO will register participants for the credit) - Health Screening: TB test and immunization record for the past year are required ONLY for selected Program Participants - Program Eligibility: PRIORITY given to students entering their APPLICATION year (those who will apply the summer after completing the internship.) - Successful applicants will be notified by email communication prior to the start of the Spring semester Private Practice Clinical Internship Private Practice Internship Application - Medical Specialty: Various (Allergy/Immunology; Cardiology; Family Practice; General Surgery; Internal Medicine; Neurology; Orthopedics; Pediatrics; Plastic Surgery; Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation; Pulmonary; Rheumatology) - Duties: To shadow physicians practicing medicine in different specialties either in their private offices or in a hospital setting - Shadowing Commitment: 4-5 hours, once a week, to be arranged between physician and student - Length of Service: Spring semester (Jan. – April) - Program Orientation Period: One late afternoon/early evening (during the first week of Spring classes) - Minimum GPA Requirements: 3.3 - Other Requirements: Unofficial copy of transcripts/academic audit, Personal Resume and “Weekly View” of Spring class schedule. - Academic Credit: Registration for MCB 4941 (required ONLY for selected Program Participants – one credit unit – PHPAO will register participants for the credit) - Program Eligibility: PRIORITY given to students entering their APPLICATION year (those who will apply the summer after completing the internship.) - Successful applicants will be notified by email communication prior to the start of the Spring semester V.A. Hospital – Orlando – Optometry Internship Optometry Internship Application - Medical Specialty: Optometry - Location: V.A. Hospital, Orlando – Optometry Clinic - Duties: To shadow optometric physicians in an out-patient facility - Shadowing Commitment: 4 hrs/week for 10 weeks per semester - Length of Service: One semester (minimum 40 hours of service) - Program Orientation: at the V.A. facility during the first week of classes - Minimum GPA: 3.0 - Other Requirements: Unofficial copy of transcripts/academic audit, Personal Resume and “Weekly View” of Spring class schedule. - Academic Credit: Registration for MCB 4941 (required ONLY for selected Program. Participants – one credit unit – PHPAO will register participants for the credit) - Program Eligibility: PRIORITY given to students entering their APPLICATION year (those who will apply the summer after completing the internship.) - Successful applicants will be notified by email communication prior to the start of the Spring semester - Letters of recommendation from the internship mentor will only be granted if the student has participated in the internship for 2 semesters.
