The Department of Molecular Biology and Microbiology PURE: Program for Undergraduate Research Experience There are approximately 90 undergraduates conducting biomedical research with faculty members in the Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences. With this experience, students gain a hands-on approach to learning science. Research provides students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge of biomedical science, to understand the scientific method, and to formulate an accurate view of the research experience. Program for Undergraduate Research Experience (PURE) is designed to further enhance the undergraduate research experience. This highly competitive program will admit approximately 10-15 students a year. As part of a community of undergraduate researchers, participants will have greater access to the faculty, will gain additional training in the practice and communication of science, will receive preparation for post-graduate education, will become aware of their career opportunities, and will be encouraged to present their work at scientific conferences. PURE is a year-long program that begins in the summer. We accept applications until mid-spring and place students with mentors soon thereafter. Students who already have a research mentor are encouraged to apply and to pursue their ongoing project as part of PURE. Students can be involved with other UCF research programs (SMART, RAMP, etc.) and still participate in PURE. You do not need to be in PURE in order to participate in undergraduate research. Most students find research projects on their own or through other UCF programs. Visit the UCF Office of Undergraduate Research (www.our.ucf.edu/) for information regarding other on-campus research activities. PURE Coordinators: Ken Teter, PhD. Bill Self, PhD. contact:
