This is an exciting time for biomedical sciences at UCF. The Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences will help the College of Medicine to build a research intensive medical school where cutting edge medical research will span the entire spectrum from the laboratory bench to bedside of the patients, providing a great environment of training physicians and biomedical researchers. We vigorously pursue our mission, to build nationally recognized research programs and undergraduate and graduate programs in biomedical sciences. The School is well on its way of accomplishing its goal towards hiring faculty members to build vigorous research programs focused on cancer, cardiovascular diseases, neurological diseases and infectious diseases. Construction of a new Burnett Biomedical Sciences building at the UCF Health Sciences Campus at Lake Nona is now complete. The 198,000 sq.ft. five story building with a major transgenic animal facility and Biosafety level 3 laboratories is is ready for occupancy and the first faculty are moving into the building this Fall. It is the first of several buildings that will create a biomedical cluster that will include not only the Burnett School building, but also UCF’s College of Medicine, the Burnham Institute and a satellite University of Florida research building, a new Veterans Administration Medical Center and Nemours Children’s Hospital all of which will have vigorous biomedical research programs. The top floor of the Burnett building will be the temporary home of the MD Anderson Cancer Research Institute. In addition, the School has formed active partnerships with other units such as the College of Optics and Photonics, the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the NanoScience Technology Center to build interdisciplinary research and education programs in the innovative applications of photonics and nanoscience to biomedical problems. The School recently updated its undergraduate curriculum to better prepare students for health professions and graduate studies in biomedical sciences. The School also provides pre-health advisement for UCF students to prepare them for entry into health professional schools. Our BS degree program in Biotechnology started Fall 2007 and graduated the first students in Spring 2009.
Our Medical Laboratory Science Program prepares tomorrow's medical laboratory technologists. We have an MS program in Molecular Biology and Microbiology and a new MS Program in biotechnology. The interdisciplinary PhD program in Biomedical Science prepares tomorrow's biomedical scientists. To help provide management personnel for the emerging biotechnology industry in Florida, in collaboration with our College of Business Administration, we have started MS/MBA and PhD/MBA programs. The Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences is committed to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education and to building innovative interdisciplinary research programs to discover solutions for important biomedical problems that will help find cures for major diseases and to provide a highly creative environment to foster our educational programs. |
